What is The Huichol Center?

A center for cultural survival and the traditional arts.

Facing territorial encroachment of their sacred land and a need to survive in a modern world, the Huichol Center serves as a bridge between a cultural divide. Within the rugged mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, The Huichol Center empowers both Huichol individuals and communities across the country to maintain their spiritual, artistic, and cultural heritage by preparing them to coexist with the outside world on their own terms. With careful planning and education the Huichol people can thrive in today’s world without sacrificing their native traditions or language.

Art that makes a difference in the world.

This two and a half decade project has been a slow, ever-evolving process, and has developed the following working strategies and goals to address economic, educational, and health issues:

  • Economic Self Sufficiency—"Hand-Crafts, Not Hand- Outs”;
  • Sustainable Agriculture and Elimination of Hunger;
  • Aid to The Impoverished; Medical Assistance;
  • Educational  Enrichment and Leadership Opportunities;
  • Aid To Tribal Leaders and Religious Practitioners;
  • The Huichol Center Ethnographic Interactive Data Base.
