ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY
There are few jobs available in the outside world for the Huichol people. Many only speak Huichol, are illiterate and have no marketable skills. Often, they wind up as migrant field laborers far from their homeland, or as beggars.
The Huichol Center's "Hand-Crafts, Not Hand-Outs Project" creates culturally relevant jobs for Huichols in their home communities. Aikutzi, by Huichol is a result of this project and teaches artisans refined skills which reduces mass migration to the outside world. The Huichols become skilled entrepreneurs able to generate income for their families and in turn, create economic self-sufficiency in their own communities. |
